In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.—Genesis 1:1-2

The Creation story isn’t a fairy tale. Its an accurate account of how everything got its start. Of course, it takes a great deal of faith to believe this story. It’s the exact opposite of science’s theory of evolution. I guess you could say that both are theories and both require deep thinking and a measure of faith to accept. We go the route of the Bible. Believing in a big bang and the process of macro evolution seems dumb to us. Life is way to detailed to be an accident.

In the first chapter of the Bible, we can see God literally speaking everything into existence and then crafting it with His own hands to perfection. Read Genesis 1 here. It won’t take long. Promise.

Kind of crazy, I know. But God’s words are super powerful. That’s how it all began.
But what does that mean for our life today? Why does it matter?
It means that his word has to have an important place in our lives.
It’s his word that separates light from dark, right from wrong, good things from the best things, etc…

His word is spoken to us and over our lives through the Bible.

HEART WORK CHALLENGE
Will you take this journey with us? If so, we will provide you with a devotion like this one each weekday this Summer. You will be challenged on certain days to do some heart work; which is really just some deep thinking about how what you read can actually change your life. Most days will also have an example of a prayer that you can pray to God though we encourage you to be authentic as you talk to God. The prayer examples are really just to get the ball rolling for you. Some days, we might also encourage you to write down something specific but we always recommend writing down anything that stands out to you so you can look back on it in the future for a reminder.

Today’s heart work challenge is simply to commit to this plan for the summer.

God, I am not sure what you want to say to me right now. I am not sure that I have ever thought about it or really cared enough to invest my time to figure it out. But I am going to commit to this reading plan and I’m asking you to say some things to me and over my life. Thank you. Thank you for Jesus, Amen.
